This trail is also referred to as the Jedediah Smith Memorial Bike Trail, American River Bike Trail, or American River Trail.

Whatever you call it, this great urban trail is a popular option for recreation and commuting. As such, you're sure to find some company out enjoying the river views and the various parks it passes through. For most of its 32 miles, the trail stays very close to the river, benefitting from its cooler temps and sporadic shade.

From Discovery Park, the grade is almost nonexistent until the final section between Lake Natoma and the end at Beals Point. While many hikers won't tackle the whole trail in its entirety, the trail can be accessed from several points along the way, and nearby trails and connectors provide an opportunity for out-and-backs and some loops (check out the Lake Natoma Loop).
