The Sand Ridge Lake Trail begins 200 yards to the north of the Peter Grubb Hut off an intersection with the Pacific Crest Trail ( PCT: Highway 80 to Highway 49 (near Sierra City)). The trail starts with a short descent over grantie outcroppings and then proceeds to climb out of a shallow valley dotted by open forest.

At about half-a-mile, the trail will intersect with the Hole In The Ground Trail and follows its course as it climbs northwest. A few switchbacks around 1.5 miles signal that the trails will shortly diverge. The Sand Ridge Lake Trail soon heads out across granite slabs to connect to the east shore of Sand Ridge Lake. This is a great spot for a swim and there are a number of nice campsites around the perimeter.
