Beginning from the Horseshoe Lake parking area, make a left turn at the intersection of Middle Trail and Upper Trail, and begin a gradual, rocky ascent along lava capped bluffs. You'll encounter a large drainage with a short climb just before intersecting Red Bud Trail.

Further along the trail, there is a large boulder with an unlabeled trail marker where people often take the steep trail down to intersect with Middle Trail and Lower Trail. Upper Trail becomes more chunky before leading to a rather steep drainage that requires a short scramble. After this drainage, Upper Trail terminates at West Live Oak Trail just above its intersection with Middle Trail. Heading back on Middle Trail or Lower Trail makes for a good loop.
