Though a popular hike for Bend locals, Bessie Butte remains a well-kept secret to visitors of Bend. Summer brings hikers, trail runners, and dog walkers to Bessie; snowshoers abound in the winter as the National Forest Roads leading to Bessie are regularly plowed. Be aware that there is virtually zero trees on this hike - only shrubs such as bitterbrush and sage. Keep this in mind when hiking on a hot day or with a dog! That being said, the summit provides spectacular sunset views over the Three Sister Mountains and wonderous sunrises over the Oregon High Desert. The hike begins after parking off the side of National Forest Road 1810. There, you'll see the trailhead sign reading "Bessie Butte Trail NO. 68". Look up to see the trail snaking its way around the butte; it's all up from here. Vistas of The Three Sisters, etc begin on the north face of the butte. At the large, flat, bald summit of Bessie, you'll find a well-placed bench to rest and take in the expansive vistas of The Three Sisters, Broken Top, Mt. Bachelor, and the Oregon High Desert. None
