There are three possible trailheads for this all season hike, offering outings of varying lengths. The longest version begins at the Hardesty Lower Trailhead and follows the north branch of Goodman Creek close to FR 5833. For the recommended hike that takes in a historic shelter, begin at the Eagles Rest Lower Trailhead. An even shorter hike leaves from the Eagles Rest Upper Trailhead. This is a multi-use trail, so watch out for mountain bikes coming downhill. Starting at the Eagles Rest Lower Trailhead, hike a little less than two miles up an easy grade to Eagles Rest Upper Trailhead, passing the historic Ash Swale Shelter along the way. The shelter was originally constructed to serve pack trains supplying the forest lookouts in the area. After the upper trailhead, the trail gets a little steeper. There is some poison oak along this upper section. From Eagles Rest, there are good views of the surrounding foothill country, including Mount June and Hardesty Mountain. The open rocky areas see a pretty wildflower bloom in late spring. The lookout house was removed in 1971. To change this to a 12.6 mile round trip, start at the Hardesty Lower Trailhead (pass required) and follow the trail four miles to the Eagles Rest Lower Trailhead.
