This trail links the Red Buttes Boundary Trail #5254 with the Butte Fork Trail #957 in Cedar Basin. It also provides access to Lonesome Lake, an important perennial water source in this part of the Siskiyou Crest.<br><br>The #956 can be used to make a great loop through old growth forest along the Butte Fork of the Applegate River. Starting from the Horse Camp Trailhead, ascend the Horse Camp Trail #958 to the Butte Fork Trail #957, then follow that trail through huge old growth up the Butte Fork. In Cedar Basin, connect with the Fort Goff Trail #956 and climb past Lonesome Lake to the crest. Once there, follow the Red Buttes Boundary Trail #5254 and the PCT: Seiad Valley to Highway 5 (near Ashland, OR) to Echo Lake and a junction with the Horse Camp Trail #958, which you descend back to your starting point. From Cedar Basin, you can add a short side trip to visit Azalea Lake.<br><br>The #956 can also be used in conjunction with the PCT: Seiad Valley to Highway 5 (near Ashland, OR), the Red Buttes Boundary Trail #5254, the Azalea Lake/Fir Glade Trail #955, the Steve Fork Trail #905, the Sucker Creek Trail #906, and the Boundary Trail #1207 to follow the Siskiyou Crest from Cook and Green Pass to Grayback Mountain.
