Considered by many to be the prettiest waterfall of the trio that includes Spirit Falls and Pinard Falls, Moon Falls is also the tallest. Most sources parrot the conventional measurement of the waterfall height to be 100 feet, but the Northwest Waterfall Survey has confirmed these falls to be almost twice as high at 190 feet (thus also confirming that layperson 'estimates' can be wildly inaccurate)! A short trail leads to the waterfall. While in some years the trail can be hiked in any month, there may be some periods in winter when the roads are blocked by snow and/or fallen trees. The Moon Falls Trail begins on an old logging road in lush secondary forest. Then, for the last quarter mile, you'll be hiking under an old growth canopy. Boots are best: the trail can have some muddy sections even in the summer and is very muddy in the wet season. Moon Falls carries Alex Creek in a tall veil over a mossy basalt cliff, sending a fine mist of droplets through the cedars. Water volume decreases significantly by mid-summer. There's a picnic table here, and it's a scramble on a rocky slope over fallen trees to get an unobstructed view of the falls. Some waterfall aficionados consider Moon Falls to be the most picturesque waterfall in the area. Combine this hike with hikes to nearby Spirit Falls (its upstream neighbor on Alex Creek) and Pinard Falls for a total of 2.8 miles and 600 feet of elevation gain.
