Friends of the Wildwoods Hike

Overview

The Lincoln City Open Space Bond Measure of 1998 was supported by the voting community and has allowed the city to acquire various undeveloped properties for preservation and public enjoyment. The 33-acre Friends of Wildwoods Open Space, named after a local advocacy group, was acquired in 2001. A short trail system allows access to this wooded coastal wetland. A track, very muddy during the wet season, heads into Sitka spruce/western hemlock forest with an understory of elderberry, sword fern, salmonberry, red alder, ivy, evergreen huckleberry and salal. There are more mature, mossy woods in the bottomland to the left. The trail drops into a shallow gully with a slippery footbridge and rises through a mossy elderberry thicket. Reach a grove of Sitka spruce and head around to the right. The main trail veers right and reaches Tide Avenue at the Lincoln Village Apartments. There is much invasive holly and ivy in the these woods. Turning back, you can head down a lesser trail from where the main trail veers and reach a makeshift platform above a cordgrass swamp. There’s no continuation of the trail here, so return to the junction and make your way back to your vehicle.
