Here are the places you can camp along the Mt Whitney Trail. You are not allowed to camp outside of designated tent-site campgrounds. Outpost Camp and Trail Camp are the most popular options, and are directly next to the trail.
If 21.7 miles in one day feels like too much, you can split the hike into an overnight or even take a few days.
The Mountaineer’s Route (yellow) is shorter than the Mt Whitney Trail (purple), but it’s a Class 3 scramble with exposure, not a hiking trail.
