THE bucket-list crossing of the entire Grand Canyon on foot, which can be done in a day if you plan it right, or overnight.
On this route there are four lodging options spaced between both rims.
Want to stay in a private cabin at the halfway point? Then you need to book Phantom Ranch, which is a tough booking to land.
If it’s your first time, I recommend North-to-South: down the North Kaibab Trail and up the Bright Angel Trail.
Even if you pick a good window to do the hike, temperatures can be extreme and you may have to start before dawn to beat the heat. This is the temperature in early October for one of my hikes.
Here’s the overall idea. You hike from the North Rim, down to the Colorado River, and hike up the walls of the Grand Canyon to the South Rim. You use a shuttle to get from the South to the North Rim.
