The Surveyors Ridge Trail is primarily a mountain biker’s trail that runs north-south above the Hood River Valley for about 16 ½ miles, usually never very far from Forest Road 17. Most of the views along the way come from clearcuts, but there are also good stretches of forest as well as open wildflower meadows. Hikers generally avoid the northern stretch of this route because it is really an old road track that also doubles as the motorcycle trail #300. With that in mind, weekends are not recommended, but during the week it’s a quiet hike and, in spring, the reward is plenty of wildflowers as well as some outstanding views. The first 1.5 miles of this hike is on the Hood River County Tree Farm, and then it enters the Mt. Hood National Forest.
