Overview
In 2017, a route of the Timberline Trail took it 700 feet lower down the canyon than previous crossings of the Eliot Branch. The reroute also extends the trail by 1.5 miles. There are numerous well-graded switchbacks on both the descent and ascent offering views to Mount Adams , Mount Rainier , and Mount Saint Helens . The reroute was designed to carry the trail into a less volatile section of the canyon, which experienced a severe washout in 2006.
