Shellrock Mountain (Surveyors Ridge) Hike

Overview

The Surveyor’s Ridge Trail #688 runs for 16 ½ miles above the East Fork Hood River. In recent years, the trail has been maintained by the 44 Trails mountain biker’s group, and hikers have largely ignored it, which is their loss given the views, wildflowers, and relative isolation of the route. This hike begins near the southern terminus of the trail, first taking a connector trail to join Trail #688. Most of the landscape is secondary forest, with more recent clearcuts and meadows offering views to Mount Hood . The trail is always close to Surveyors Ridge Road (FR 17), but several features along the way, including Tamarack Rock , some great viewpoints, and Shellrock Mountain are just rewards for the outing. The trail becomes busy with mountain bikers on sunny weekends, so a weekday foray is best for hikers. You will also see signs of the Dog River Pipeline Replacement Project (2022-23) on the first part of the hike.
