Westgard Pass Loop

Overview

Right where White Mountain Road cuts off Hwy 168 toward the Ancient Bristlecone Forests, there's a spot to park under a tree. Climb up White Mountain Road a short distance from here, and look for a sign that says "exhibit". Take a left and ride past an interpretive sign up an old doubletrack, 8S109. Stay on this until a 4-way where it crosses a larger doubletrack (4S01B, not signed), and turn left.

Climb 4S01B up through a pass, continuing onto 35E309 and turn right on 35E310 at the top of the pass. This turns into a fun descent through a gully. At the bottom of this road, you'll get pointed up a hill to the right onto 35E311 (don't go left!). The road rolls, then goes up a steep hill to a 4-way intersection at a small pass. Turn left on the unmarked road, 8S109.

This rolls, drops down a hill, and hits White Mountain Road. Watch for traffic, and go straight across to the dirt road on the other side (4S01G). A short climb and this ends where a singletrack marked with a forest service sign starts, Westgard Pass Trail.

The singletrack drops down, rocky at first passing below some ledges. After a switchback, the trail drops into a gully where it gets fast and fun. You come out on another doubletrack at the bottom of a wash.

Turn right and descend this road to Hwy 168. Turn right then climb up 168, over Westgard Pass and back to your car.
