Suburban development on the west side of McMinnville beginning in the 1990s allowed reservation of some land for greenways. South of 2nd Street, a linear park follows the Middle Branch of Cozine Creek. A newer paved greenway, begun in 2005, runs along a powerline corridor through housing developments that are still under construction at the north end. Jay Pearson Neighborhood Park, with its state of the art play area and a restroom, was opened here in October 2019. This is unabashed modern suburbia, with a couple of patches of natural wetland, but a welcome open space for those living nearby that gets crowded on sunny afternoons and weekends. You’ll see signs for the Westside Greenway Linear Park at the intersection of Goucher and Apperson Streets. Follow the wide paved trail as its leads south between backyard fences, a line of cherry trees on the right. In one block, you’ll cross Wright Street and continue south before making a sharp turn to the right to follow the small Middle Branch of Cozine Creek under a canopy of Oregon ash. When you reach Agee Street, head right for 30 yards and cross to resume the trail. Now you’re hiking a lawn expanse near the creek, passing a play area. Cross Cypress Street, where the creek disappears into a culvert and then resurfaces at a small riparian thicket of willow and red osier dogwood. After crossing Filbert, you’ll come to a junction with a red bench, your marker for heading north on a longer walk. You can continue west a little farther, however, through a parkland expanse dotted with blue spruce plantings, until you come to Westvale Street. Return to the red bench junction, and go left to cross Sesame Street. Keep going along a small stream with an open field to your right. Turn right onto the sidewalk of busy 2nd Street, and walk about a block and a half, passing the Salvation Army Center. Cross Filbert Street, and then cross 2nd to reach Meadows Drive heading north.
